What are the possible causes of Oligospermia?

The possible causes of low sperm count can be determined by the following points:

Hormonal Imbalances

Hypothalamus and pituitary glands mainly produce the hormones that are required for the further production of sperm. Due to any condition, if the alteration occurs in the production of the hormones, it further affects the sperm and possibly leads to a low sperm count.

Ejaculatory Problems

The ejaculation problem means the situation when the semen flows in the opposite direction towards the bladder instead of flowing towards the penis. This is a serious condition and can also lead to infertility among men.

Undescended Testicles

This is an inborn condition and further leads to infertility among men. At the time of the fatal development, if the testicles fail to get descend from the abdomen to the sac, which forms the scrotum, then the fertility gets hampered and causes a low sperm count in the semen.

Anti-sperm anti-bodies

Certain immune cells are present in the body commonly known as the Anti-sperm anti-bodies that further kills the sperm cells. This happens in an uncertain way as they think that it is something harmful to the body. In addition, this possibly leads to low sperm count.

Chromosomal malfunctioning

Klinefelter’s syndrome, Kallmann’s syndrome, and Kartagener’s syndrome are certain genetic malfunctioning that further leads to the abnormal development of the male reproductive organs. Normally this kind of defect is found in a person with inheritance.

Environmental Factors

Industrial chemicals, heavy metal exposures, radiations, or X-rays, and overheating of the testicles are some common examples of environmental factors and further lead to low sperm count.

Obstruction is a chronic and major cause of Oligospermia. This is the situation when the sperm-carrying ducts get blocked by some outsider development. The development further includes the growth of cystic fibrosis or any injury due to prior surgeries and infections. This can severely lead to a low sperm count.

Injury or Trauma

A surgery that includes anyone following chemotherapy, vasectomy, hernia repair surgery, scrotal surgeries, prostate surgeries, etc can possibly be the cause of the Oligospermia.

Antifungal, antibiotics, ulcer medicines, chemotherapy drugs, testosterone replacement therapy, etc are some common drugs that hamper the growth of the sperm in a person’s body.

Sperm motility is referred to as the active movement of the sperm cell present in the semen. In normal conditions, the sperm cells naturally flow towards the egg to perform the fertilization whereas, in abnormal motility, the sperm does not have active movement and fails to reach the egg.
