Overview

One of the major causes of infertility is considered Low Sperm Count and Motility. Due to the factors including oligozoospermia, teratozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, a person or couple might face problems at the time of conceiving. 90% of all cases with poor sperm quality result in infertility in men and from 20% to 40% are seen in couples.

What is Oligo-Astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT)?

Oligo-Astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT) is a condition that leads to a low sperm count. This condition does not include anyone kind of disorder but can be divided into three disorders. It further includes the oligozoospermia: which is defined as the low amount of sperm count, asthenozoospermia: this is the situation where the sperm loses its mobility and performs a poor movement, teratozoospermia: This is the abnormal shaping and structure of the sperm.

Subfertility can occur in a person due to the reason of OAT. Moreover, Subfertility is another situation, when a person especially a man fails to make a woman pregnant after 1 year of regular sex without having birth control measures.

What are the Symptoms of OAT?

The major symptom that will help you understand whether you are affected by OAT is the time when you are unable to make your partner pregnant or can’t conceive after 1 year of regular unprotected sex. There are other symptoms of OAT too but that can depend on the cause of the OAT resulting in Infertility. Moreover, if you notice any kind of varicocele, or find a mass or swelling near the testicles or in the scrotum which further feels like a bag of worms can also be a symptom of OAT.

What are common Causes of OAT?

The OAT can be caused due to several reasons. The reasons are further listed below for your better understanding:

  • Genetics– Genes that are transported to a person by their parents can lead to infertility. In simple terms, if you are born with some genes that affect sperm production, movement, and transport then there are high chances that you are affected by OAT.
  • Medicines– Continuous use of several medicines can also hamper the several factors of the sperm. Especially medicines including steroids and other medications that help to cure high blood pressure, cancer, or depression may affect your fertility and can lead to OAT.
  • Abnormal Hormonal Levels– Hypothalamus and pituitary glands mainly produce the hormones that are required for the further production and functionality of sperm. Due to any condition, if the alteration occurs in the production of the hormones, it further affects the sperm and possibly leads to OTA causing.
  • Antibodies– Human bodies tend to create proteins commonly called antibodies with the help of the immune system and further attacks the sperm thinking viruses or bacteria and affect the several properties of the sperm as well.
  • Infections– Several infections present in the male reproductive system can hamper male fertility. In addition, these kinds of infections are commonly found in the prostate.
  • Lifestyle– Excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs, tobacco can also hamper sperm count and functionality. Industrial chemicals, heavy metal exposures, radiations, or X-rays, and overheating of the testicles are some common examples of environmental factors and further lead to OTA.
  • Varicocele– This is the condition that occurs in the veins and leads to enlargement and dilation in the veins of the scrotum.

Your doctor may also want to know the time period you and your partner are trying to conceive. A Physical Examination

In the physical examination, your doctor will examine your whole body to check the presence of any kind of imbalance in your hormones. Some of the examinations include increased body fat, body hair, breast tissue, and the size and shape of the testicles.

Blood Tests

A blood test can also be performed by your doctor to find out the reason behind your infertility. Moreover, this can also help to know about your overall health condition.

Gene Tests

This is further needed to find out the condition of the genes, whether you are affected by the abnormal genes or not. This also provides knowledge regarding whether your genes are stopping you from conceiving or not.

Semen Analysis

Semen Analysis is the checking of the fertility of a man. This test if results in an increased number of white blood cells then it can be assumed that the sperm problem regarding the movement and function.

Sperm Analysis

This is the analysis of the sperm performed with the help of the mucus.

Spermatic Venography

This is the procedure of checking the position of the veins in the scrotum. In this process, the doctor can insert a dye inside your body and take out the X-rays to find out the presence of varicocele.

What is the treatment procedure of OAT?

The treatments performed by the doctor to cure the PAT disorder are further listed below:

Surgery

Vasectomy or varicocele may often require surgery. While performing surgery, your doctor will close the enlarged veins and will redirect blood from another vein.

Medication

There are several medications that your doctor can prescribe you to further treat infections and inflammation. This type of treatment can definitely stop the drop of the sperm count and can balance the hormone level. The doctor may include steroids and antioxidants. Steroids further help to treat infertility caused by the immune system whereas antioxidants help to decrease the damage of sperms caused by the reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Percutaneous Embolization

Embolization is another procedure that is used to cure a varicocele, where the veins get collapsed and the blood flow in the veins also stops.

Extraction of Sperm

This is the removing of sperm from the testicles or epididymis to save it for further use or to fertilize a woman’s egg later on.
