Hair Transplant

Hair loss is a common problem among men and women of age. This issue leads to low self-esteem and dwindling confidence. However, various hair transplants help grow your hair back.

There may be several reasons for hair loss in people, and not all of them are reversible. Hence, a hair transplant is an ideal solution to all your hair loss issues. Be it hair fall, pattern baldness, hair thinning, or a receding hairline.

What is a hair transplant?

Hair transplant refers to a procedure in which a surgeon plants hair on a bald area of the head. Usually, the doctor removes hair from the side or rear of the head to implant on the top or front. The doctor generally gives local anesthesia before carrying out the transplant.

Hair loss often occurs as pattern baldness. There could be a variety of reasons for such hair loss like:

  • Genetics
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Chronic diseases
  • Intake of medicines (some of them)
  • Unhealthy diet

Slit graft and micrograft transplant are the two types of hair treatments available. Slit graft procedure involves moving 4 to 10 strands of hair per implant. Similarly, the micrograft procedure involves moving 2 to 3 strands per implant. You may undertake the appropriate transplant according to the span of the area that needs coverage.

Who might benefit from a hair transplant?

Getting a hair transplant enhances your appearance and boosts your self-esteem. It helps fix various hair problems such as:

  • Male pattern baldness in men above the age of 35 or more
  • Hair thinning problem in women
  • Hair loss due to scalp injuries or burns

In the above cases, hair loss is permanent. The affected areas cannot grow back hair on them. However, a hair transplant is not suitable for everyone. Transplantation requires some factors for effective results. Hair replacement cannot fix the following hair fall issues:

  • Not enough donor sites on the body to remove hair from for transplant on the scalp
  • Extensive pattern hair loss on the scalp in women
  • Hair loss due to medical treatments like chemotherapy
  • Presence of keloidal scars on the scalp, due to surgery or injury

What happens during and after a hair transplant?

During the hair transplant:

The surgeon begins the procedure by fully cleaning your scalp. Then, he gives you a small anesthesia needle to numb the area to be covered. The hair follicles for the transplant may be obtained in two different ways: FUT and FUE.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedure:

The surgeon uses a scalpel or a blade to remove a strip of skin from the rear scalp. The cut is usually many inches long. Then, he seals the incision with stitches.

He cuts the removed scalp skin into several tiny portions using a magnifier and a surgical knife. Finally, the surgeon implants these portions on the bald area. This transplant displays natural-like hair growth.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure:

In this treatment, the surgeon directly removes hair follicles from the back of the head. He does this using several tiny punch holes. The surgeon punches tiny holes using a needle on the scalp area that needs a transplant. Then, he places the hair follicles in these holes.

Using this method, the surgeon transplants thousands of hair strands in one sitting. However, the scalp remains covered with gauze or bandage for some days.

Either of these sessions may take around four hours or even more. The surgeon removes the stitches only after 10 days or so post the transplant. To attain the desired amount of hair transplant, you may need at least three sessions. However, they perform these sessions months apart let each transplant settle.

After the hair transplant

After the transplant session, you may feel soreness on the scalp. The doctor may prescribe medicines such as:

  • Pain-killers for relief
  • Antibiotics, to prevent infection of the scalp
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs to prevent swelling
  • Minoxidil or Finasteride to promote hair growth

Normally, most of the transplanted hairs fall out in a few days. This happens to promote the growth of new hair. It may take around a year to achieve your desired hair growth.

Risks and Costs of Treatment

Although hair transplants come with very minor side effects, they may cause problems like:

  • Swelling or bleeding of the scalp
  • Scalp infection
  • Itching of the scalp
  • Sudden loss of transplanted hair
  • Numbness on the hair transplanted area
  • Folliculitis, or infection of the follicles
  • Crust forms on the transplanted area of the scalp

As far as the costs of hair transplants are concerned, they depend on the span of moved hair. It may cost more for larger hair transplants. However, they usually cost around $4,000 to $15,000. Besides, most health insurance does not cover this treatment.

Success Rates

Hair transplant, like all other medical treatments, does not have a 100% success rate. The efficiency of the procedure depends on factors like the experience of the surgeon and the thickness of the transplanted hair. Besides, hair transplantation only shows modest results. To achieve extreme hair growth, you might have to undergo tissue expansion or skin flap surgery.

However, on the whole, FUE hair transplant has shown more positive results in people. Moreover, you can undertake PRP or Platelet-rich plasma therapy along with FUE to increase hair regrowth. PRP has shown more than 75% regrowth within a few months.

Do hair transplants last?

Most people who undergo hair transplantation notice thicker hair regrowth. However, they may suffer hair thinning and hair fall post the treatment. This also gives a patchy look to the transplanted hair. It is necessary to undergo follow-up transplants for lasting hair regrowth.

Moreover, most of the transplanted hair follicles may die. Hence, hair does not regrow in these areas. Discuss appropriate techniques with your doctor. Also, avoid washing your hair for a couple of days post your transplant.

Is a hair transplant painful?

The hair transplantation is not at all painful. Since they give local anesthesia, you do not feel anything. However, the transplanted area may feel soft after the treatment. You may suffer soreness, swelling, or redness in the area.

The scalp may feel sore after the operation. Hence, the doctor may advise you to take a rest for a couple of weeks. He may also prescribe a few medications. The transplant heals over time and hair starts growing again. However, you may need follow-up transplants for better results. Consult your doctor and follow his instructions wisely to avoid pain post-treatment.

FUE vs. FUT: What type of hair transplant is best for you?

Hair transplant aims at offering you maximum hair regrowth. FUE is proven to be more successful in its results than FUT. However, if there is little hair loss like balding or a receding hairline, FUT is often ideal.

Although both transplants are effective, you should consult your surgeon before proceeding. He will suggest which method suits you best.

Conclusion

Hair loss is often frustrating and affects your appearance largely. To overcome this problem, there are many ways, the most efficient being a hair transplant. The scalp is one of the most delicate parts of the body. Utmost care should be taken before operating on it.
